Dove Soap campaign about advertising fashion/beauty distortion
This very short film (less than a minute) really captures the essence of how advertising distorts reality. The campaign is directed at girl's and women's self esteem, but it certainly illustrates a larger media problem as well.

1. I've seen this one before, but it's unreal. They might as well have used a
cyborg on that billboard, because that is not her!
OTOH, I could use some help!:hide:

j/k I'm not vain and too old to care.

5. I've seen similar before/after photos of Playboy models
You see the airbrushed photo, but roll your mouse over the photo and the original unretouched photos appear instead.

Stomachs pooch out, arms get thicker, hips get more or less curvy.

Eye opening, to say the least. I'm pretty sure Hef never allowed that in the old days.

6. I'm sure not.
Marilyn Monroe was all the rage back in the early days of Playboy, and she was a size 12!

9. Among the many artistic jobs I've held
Photograph Retoucher and Finisher was one of the most enlightening. Not everyone realizes that there isn't a single photograph in any magazine, whether in the editorial content or advertising, that hasn't been altered or manipulated in some way. It might be simple, such as altering the contrast and brightness, or it might be changing the sky from a pale blue to one that has dramatic lighting and clouds. I wish anyone who reads fashion magazines would know that there isn't a single model who wasn't changed in Photoshop to be something different than human. Models are screened from the population, groomed and made up and asked to lose weight, then distorted photographically--and we're asked to relate to them.
