Not that I think Ron Sr. was a shining beacon of intelligence, by any means. More than anything he was a "pretty face" (as much as a 70-year-old man can be :P) to put on an otherwise unpalatable ideology.

Reagan Sr's overnite conversion from FDR liberal, union leader to corporate $hill and RW hack.

Nancy's nutty family influence may acccount for some of it but not all of it.

Their ambivalence toward their children: perplexing in the extreme.

Said ambivalence ( emotional distance, etc. ) might explain Ron Jr.'s and Patti's off-the-reservation politics to a degree.

In any case: I like Ron Jr. a lot.
