Media distractions

I was listening to a great podcast on the media: http://www.joankenley.com/20090411.html - got me to thinking about how depressing it is that overpaid media pundits argue just for the sake of arguing, not to inform – just to distract us into thinking that there is any intelligent conversation going on in the public discourse about any issue. How embarrassing it is that no real questions are and were asked at the debates (“Why aren’t you wearing a flag pin?”?? No torture? Guantanamo? Domestic wiretapping of U.S. citizens??? Such a farce!). Any examples of recent media distractions? Topics that were brought up not for any real debate, but to pander to commercial polling? Obama and the "socialist" distraction is one I can think of.
