Waco paper's new owner puts "In God We Trust" on the front page
Clifton Robinson, the new owner of the Waco Herald Tribune, began his tenure today but putting "In God We Trust" on the front page of the paper just below the name.

Coupled with the departure of columnist John Young, I have a very sinking feeling about this.

2. John Young was the ONLY worthwile part of the paper
when it was owned by Cox. So the owner dumps him and and swings even further right. I hope the bastard loses his shirt.

3. We have subscribed to the paper for nearly 30 years...
A friend had warned me that the new owners would put that slogan under the title: I saw it today with a sinking heart. I have contributed many letters over the years (and have received some fiery responses back), so I want to support my local paper. However, if the paper begins refusing liberal commentary, I will drop our subscription. Every Sunday edition has a "column" (an anti-Obama rant) by Ted Nugent. Here's the irony: the good guy, John Young, had edited Nugent's rambling. My husband and I had always figured someone had been assigned that task; what a tedious job.

4. It's Waco. What do you expect?
Baylor's there. Catholics here in San Antonio laughed about Waco when I grew up here in the 60's. They blamed Waco and the Bible Belt up through Dallas as the reason we didn't have horse racing and liquor by the drink.

5. Waco is not as bad as you think
I moved here from Austin last summer with great trepidation. I cringe when I hear the Waco is Wacko motto. I learned not to read Ted Nugent's column, it just got me infuriated. As a UT journalism grad and a former employee of the now-defunct San Antonio Light, I've always subscribed to my local paper where ever I lived and I do also here. But I'll give him a month to show what he plans to do, and if it is as I suspect, I'll stop subscribing. Which is shame because the Trib does a good job of focusing on local issues.

6. Welcome to the neighborhood!
We live in a very republican neighborhood by Lake Waco. Before the election, we had our Obama/Biden sign in the yard: someone left an invitation to join the Communist Part of the USA on our front porch.

7. Yikes, at least Woodway is civilized
I work near the airport, I know what you mean!

Woodway is civilized, no one commented on my Obama sign or my sticker. But my kids were subjected to a lot of anti-Obama rhetoric by the kids at Midway Intermeidate and in Elementary school.

8. Oh yes, Midway...
My daughter was one of the very few Democrats both at Midway HS and TAMU. Her government teacher in hs was horribly republican, so our daughter would politely take issue with some of her comments. Our daughter now lives in one of the nation's most liberal cities: NYC.
