I posted the gist of this in the GD forum...a lot of what Rush is doing is to keep his Radio empire alive and relevant...that's more important to him since that's the power to his dillusional world that have given him power, wealth, access and influence. The radio show is Rush's greatest opiate.
That said, there's the behind-the-scenes game being played by Rush's syndicator to keep stations from dumping the show. A good example was Dr. Laura; who in the wake of her "photo spread" lost a lot of major market affiliates who either dropped her show or moved her to lesser rated time slots. Rush could see the same thing happen real quickly if he's perceived as an advertising libability or doesn't maintain adequate ratings.
One way to keep things "hot" is to use Rush's show to stir up the hive and as a platform to answer allegations. You'll notice he's using his show for this...doing something radio programmers like...making news that draws listeners (including many from DU), giving the show a spike in ratings. But I submit that this bounce is short-lived.
From all that's been revealed, Rush is in deep ditto here and will face some type of charge. The drug aspect is not settling well with many in Wingnut land. They can accept felons like North & Liddy and adulterers, but not druggies. The real impact of both Rush's addiction and the amount he was consuming still hasn't come to light to many, but surely will when it's presented in court...then Katy bar the medicine cabinet.
I could put out a timeline of where Rush is heading...but I'll give good odds that by Election Day, 2004, Rush Limbaugh will no longer be a factor on the American political dynamic. And the person salivating at his downfall is O'Reilly. Stay tuned and happy holidays.
