The New York Times edges closer to charging for online content
The New York Times will begin charging readers for access to NYTimes.com in coming weeks, New York magazine reports this morning, citing anonymous sources at the Times. Gabriel Sherman, the author of the New York piece, which was published on the popular New York blog Daily Intel, points out the move could be timed to sync with the release of the Apple Tablet.

A Times spokesman declined to comment on the New York report. "We'll announce a decision when we believe that we have crafted the best possible business approach," Diane McNulty told CNET. "No details till then."

Screw it. I'll read it for free at my public library.

1. No thanks
One of the best tools of the Bush administration was using NYT's false information for staging the war in Iraq. I stopped reading that trash when they jacked the price up yet again to two bucks. Hope they go under.

2. Yeah, good luck with that
This bugaboo comes up every few years and it's totally stupid. I was the content manager for a news Web site (the online version of a local ABC affiliate) and the money people would float the idea every once in a while, but eventually they'd realize that a news Web site can't be profitable on its own, because people can get the same damned information for free elsewhere.

Let 'em try. They'll either cave and give it up, or they'll lose a ridiculous amount of money and THEN cave. (I can't really see NYT.com going bankrupt and shutting down though.)

5. I'd like to see them charge 7 bucks per issue
So they won't have any readership an will therefore fail faster.
