Here's my email to apfeedback@ap.org protesting their
misleading article:
Subject: George W. Bush was first to run a $1 Trillion-plus
deficit, not Obama as you imply
I was disappointed to read the following misleading sentence
in your article: "Obama unveils $3.73 trillion
budget", AP, February 14, 2011:
/------------------------------------
"The president's 2012 budget projects that the deficits
will total $7.21 trillion over the next decade with the
imbalances never falling lower below $607 billion, a figure
that would still exceed the previous deficit record before
Obama took office of $458.6 billion in 2008, President George
W. Bush's last year in office."
\---------------------------------
This, and the rest of the article paints the picture that
Obama is the first president to create an over $1 Trillion
deficit.
However, back before Obama took office, the CBO projected a
$1.2 Trillion deficit for the fiscal year 2009, according to
an AP story dated January 7, 2009. (Obama took office at noon
on January 20, 2009, 13 days later). The huge deficit
projection was a result of the financial crash of 2008 and the
Bush administration's massive stimulus in late 2008. In the
deficit forecast, the CBO did not include any of
president-elect Obama's proposed stimulus spending, according
to the AP story.
I hope you will provide this context the next time you compare
the deficit history of Bush and Obama.
Thank you,
