Let's get the debate back to reality re: the "assassination" of Osama bin Laden
and its "legality" ...

Republicans and "conservatives" (you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a conservative appearing in the "liberally-biased media") have been questioning the "necessity" of the Navy Seals shooting Osama bin Laden ... implying that Obama ordered them to murder him in cold blood. FOR POLITICAL GAIN, no less.

If there really ever would be a "liberally-biased media" at this time, someone should publicly point out to said "critic" that they would be implying that the Seals should have placed themselves in greater danger by accepting ObL not surrendering. This was a split second decision by the Seals in a heated situation. How many times have we heard defense of the U.S. military personnel (under Bush43, no less; Carter, Clinton, Obama included) when "innocents" are K.I.A. in the middle of a military operation?

A few years ago, there was an uproar over a totally different situation, and the Repugniconvicts came to the defense of an incident which would be much more like the "hit" that some Repubs are trying to paint the Osama bin Laden killing. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3807009 (the military in person was convicted ... but there was plenty of defense from the Right in the killing of bound prisoners)

another incident ... armed forces kill 12-year-old boy: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5631799#5631857

1. Perhaps we should be reminded 10 years ago, the U.S. asked for Afghanistan, then under control of
the Taliban to turn over bin laden, and what their response was

2. Wasn't it the other way around?
We didn't ask, the Taliban offered and we refused?

6. Not from my memory. This is before we invaded Afghanistan. The Taliban rejected that bin landen be
handed over to answer for their suspected role in 9/11

The taliban played their double speak saying they would put him on trial only if we could provide evidence

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 21 — The ruling Taliban of Afghanistan today further complicated the status of Osama bin Laden and rejected the ultimatum of the United States that he and his lieutenants be handed over to answer for their suspected role in last week's terrorist attacks in the United States.

http://nytimes.com/2001/09/21/international/21CND-PAK.html

3000 Americans and a lot more Muslims were killed by that piece of garbage, and his organization, and the taliban were protecting him

3. Bin Laden declared war on the US. We were at War. Bin Laden
was Primary Target in that War. We had declared over
and over we would go wherever and whenever necessary
to take him down.

That is what we did and that was legal.

Meanwhile, Abrahamic traditions of have been acted on in a fundamental way that predates modern civilization.
You can piss and moan all you want, but REAL people will demand a death to avenge wrongful death.

and the beat goes on...

4. It's not just conservatives who are questioning the "necessity" of the killing of UBL
Edited on Fri May-06-11 11:35 AM by leveymg
Those of us who would have wanted to hear his testimony about his relationship with US, Saudi, Pakistani and other intelligence services, along with his funding sources and highly-placed sponsors, will not be hearing from that witness.

Assassinating bin Laden made his interrogation and public testimony impossible. Like killing a Mob Boss in custody before he could be questioned, this was destruction of evidence, and must be viewed as such.

10. I think he would have told us more than the Bush Admin. did about some things.
It wouldn't be necessary to waterboard or otherwise torture him.

5. Who are these Republicans who are questioning things?
I'm only seeing complaints from the left.

7. Exactly right...
Has any other president in history been so raked over the coals for laying waste to a fierce and feared enemy?

I have been very ambivalent about this because I hate the thought of murdering a human being, but to ask me to show more sympathy or compassion for a mass murderer than he showed for his 3000+ dead victims and his thousands of living victims is really giving me pause... and making me say WHAT THE FUCK? Where the hell did I wake up? What manner of bizarro world is this!

11. Okay, so "Republicans" may have been a bit presumptive ...
but when I hear "Well, I'm a lifelong Democrat, but ..." as a caller's lead in for the latest RW talking point, I get suspicious.

And I've been hearing enough callers on the Bill Press Show, the Stephanie Miller Show, and the Thom Hartmann Program start up the argument that "liberals" are rejoicing Obama's "murder" of Osama bin Laden (who was one of the people that RWers constantly pointed out deserved only exactly the treatment he received from the Seals) by President Obama.

12. That is the left upset at their kindred's lack of outrage at the killing of OBL.
Which is what is roiling the board.

13. How dare Democrats/Liberals and Republicans/Conservatives agree on anything?
Edited on Fri May-06-11 02:54 PM by RC
From what I have been seeing and reading, it is hard to tell the two sides apart. The noise is basically the same for wildly different reasons.

14. question ...
if we were wondering why Bush let ObL go for so long ...

then why is it that "we" can't point out that "we" got him, with one of ours at the helm, instead of the guy who said "Dead or Alive" (and let him go ...)?

15. Apart from David Swanson, where on this board is the outrage?
I'm not finding it for some reason.. I'm finding the opposite actually.
