The so-called objective journalist watches passively with the rest of his friends an neighbors as Kitty Genovese is bludgeoned to death before his eyes. He "doesn't get involved" in the story because he's not supposed to be the story. The so-called objective journalist keeps his opinions to himself, yet can't help but expressing them in the headlines he writes, in the stories he chooses to tell, and how he chooses to tell them. He pretends to be something far greater than he is - an artiber of truth and the sole conduit of reliable information.
