Julian Assange, the founder of whistleblower website Wikileaks has harshly criticized Western news outlets for distorting information, describing them as “liars.”
"Media organizations that proudly tell the public that they seek the truth are liars," Assange said in a lecture delivered by video conference on Thursday during the opening of an InfoTrends event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the Huffington Post reported.
Currently held under house arrest in London for allegations of sexual assault, the Wikileaks founder singled out for criticism the prominent US daily The New York Times and major British daily The Guardian, with which the website signed deals for publication of leaked, classified US diplomatic cables.
"The media groups of the West, the The New York Times and The Guardian, but especially The Guardian, broke our agreements, removing crimes from the telegrams that were released to the public," he noted, referring specifically to the case of the Bulgarian government.
“The Guardian cut two thirds of the documents, hid from the Bulgarian population basic information about the corruption of its government,” he added.
