FCC Chairman Powell Visits Hometown of Clear Channel!
CauseNET for January 23, 2004
Next week, FCC Chairman, Michael Powell will hold his first hearing on how well media outlets fulfill their obligations to the public. In a very smart move, Chairman Powell has the audacity to hold this first hearing in a town where he will be assured strong industry support – San Antonio, Texas, the hometown of Clear Channel! Clear Channel is the corporation that owns more than 1,200 radio stations nationwide and is the poster child for what can go wrong when deregulation allows fewer and fewer companies to own more and more of the media market.
We congratulate Chairman Powell on seeking public opinion on this issue – something he failed to do before changing the FCC ownership rules last June – but Common Cause is concerned, and we must make sure that the public will actually have a chance to express its views.
We need your support to help ensure that citizens' voices are heard! Common Cause is organizing a Texas-wide grassroots campaign – including a media campaign, rallies in Austin and San Antonio, and public forums across the state to alert concerned citizens, like you, about this hearing. We must counter the deep pockets of big business to ensure that the public has access to quality, diversity, and fairness in our news and entertainment programs.
Please help us continue our fight to make the FCC more accountable to the public by giving a generous gift today.
