Tweety just said "Irregardless"...again!
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 07:40 PM by stopbush
I've heard him say it before. Amazin', ain't it? Especially for such a pseudo-intellectual.

And, naturally, Tweety has a panel of right-wingers on to critique the Dem primary. Sheesh!!

On edit: OK, there's a couple of Dems on his panel tonight.

They're now talking about the anger of the COUNTRY directed at bush!!!

2. Hate to rain on your parade....
According to Merriam-Webster

One entry found for irregardless.
Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: "ir-i-'gärd-l&s
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
nonstandard : REGARDLESS
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

5. "Use regardless instead."
I defer to Webster's. "Ain't" is in there as well. It doesn't mean that it's correct.

7. Thanks for making my point.
BTW - you'll notice I used "ain't" in my original post. If you look up *ain't* in the dictionary you'll probably see a mirror definition to that you just posted for *irregardless.*

I guess I'm old school. I find Tweety's use of *irregardless* on par with, hmmm, if Tweety regularly used "ain't" in airing his expert opinions.

4. nice to hear they're framing it the right way
and crediting the correct culprit - bush.

That should put a scratch in the gleaming coverage of our jobless recovery.

6. OK...
"Regardless" means without regard, i.e. in spite of
"Irregardless" means the opposite.
So really, the problem isn't that there is no such word, but that it is being used wrong.

10. It does?
So it's one of those that has a couple letters stuck on it for no real reason, like "flammable" and "inflammable"?
I hate that.
It's just wordiness...

11. Yeah, I don't know how it originated...
It does seem to irritate some people, but I don't really care }(
