Akron OH newspaper apologizes for "Bush on defensive"

... I'm talking about ``Bush on defensive'' on the Jan. 21 front page, the big, bold headline above the State of the Union story. It brought a chorus of complaints from readers.

``If you are a Democrat, you might feel he was on the defensive,'' said Tom Scahel of Medina County. ``Well, I saw the speech and he was on the offensive, and he stuck it right in their eye.''

... The Beacon Journal's headline failed to accurately reflect the news. After a lengthy discussion, the editor in charge of the front page agreed.

Unfortunately, the headline succeeded in strengtheningthe perception among some readers that the paper has a liberal agenda, even on the news pages.
