Media fight order in Bryant case
snip
By Tom Kenworthy, USA TODAY
DENVER — Attorneys representing newspaper and broadcasting companies asked the judge in the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case on Wednesday to ease restrictions that he imposed on the news media in a "decorum order."

Eagle County Court Judge Frederick Gannett's order, which he issued Tuesday, threatens reporters with expulsion from court proceedings and other, unspecified "legal sanctions" if they name the woman who has accused the Los Angeles Lakers star. (Related story: Sources claim Bryant, accuser had some consensual sexual contact)

The three-page order on what the news media can cover also bars reporters from conducting interviews at the courthouse and from taking photos or videotape of the accuser, her family, witnesses and potential jurors as they come and go from the courthouse.

Denver attorney Steven Zansberg, who represents seven media companies, filed a request with Gannett asking him to clarify or modify his order because as written it could constitute "unconstitutional prior restraint" of the press. The request also seeks fewer restrictions on interviewing and photographing parties to the case.
