Almost two years ago on September 1, 2001, at midnight, The Forward consummated a deal wherein the format of WEVD, 1050-AM, the last independent commercial radio station in New York City, changed from a progressive talk show-commentary to a third sports station in the market.
For the proverbial 30 pieces of silver, The Forward sold the oldest radio station in NYC to the Disney conglomerate, which has yet to turn the ESPN bulkhead in NYC into a notable presence. WEPN has not shown ratings worth mentioning since it started.
BTW, the one of the reasons The Forward sold WEVD was its newspaper was losing money progressively and the proceeds of the sale would subsidize the continued existence much more effectively than the steady income that their radio station brought in. So instead of fixing its newspaper, it abandoned WEVD. The Forward was entitled to sell the station, but it wasn't the best thing to do overall: the result has been the only talk radio market in NYC is nearly 100% right-wing without challenge. No new format has replaced the lost WEVD.
Boycott The Forward and its website.
