Martinez's supporters start to bail out, poll finds
Iraq, immigration and slow fundraising make times tough for the GOP senator and RNC chair.

Tamara Lytle
Chief Washington Correspondent
July 21, 2007

WASHINGTON - These are tough times for Mel Martinez.

In the past month, the Republican U.S. senator from Orlando has seen the collapse of an immigration-reform bill he helped craft. As chairman of the Republican National Committee, he has struggled to defend an unpopular president and an increasingly unpopular war, even as party fundraising lags.

And now a new Quinnipiac University poll shows him plunging to new lows in his home state. Indeed, more Florida voters -- 38 percent -- said they disapproved of Martinez's performance than the 36 percent who said they approved of it. ~snip~

1. I'd love to see him go
I still write him but I know my letters end up in the dustbin. I just want to make sure he knows that there are those who disapprove of what he does.

2. I write to him all the time, too
to let him know how disgusted I am with him. The last one I wrote was to tell him that he only pays lip service to "support the troops." He voted against cloture on Webb's Amendment so the troops could have as much time at home between deployments as they have in the war zones. I told him that supporting the troops meant he had to do more than stick a yellow ribbon magnet on his car and that I have a long memory and will certainly not support his re-election in 2010. (Not that I would anyway.) I'll probably just get another form letter from someone in his office. He's such a little weasel.
