For example, consider tariff barriers, student visas, permission to work in the other country, immigration quotas, etc.

For thread discussion and not part of the poll question:
It occurs to me that Senator McCain could attract big donations from American big business by offering a new program for guest workers from China. Although Americans just cannot harvest lettuce even for $40 per hour, it's possible that some Chinese people might be able to compete not just with American workers, but with Mexican workers.
If Senator McCain will clarify his economic policies and explain the connection between his economic policies and his moral framework, then he might discover that he is predisposed to value input from theoreticians who work for the Communist party in China. He wouldn't need to actually cross a line. Perhaps he will merely move the line a bit.
In return for helping relieve unemployment in China, McCain could negotiate for help from the Chinese military in Iraq and Afghanistan and in future planned military operations in Iran, Pakistan, North Korea, Mexico, and Canada. After all, if the world is now a global village, then Senator McCain can ask why North America remains divided and why Blackwater shouldn't employ Americans to knock down the barbed wire fences. Presumably, even though American workers may be incapable of harvesting lettuce (unless they recently immigrated from Mexico), American workers can knock down fences.
Note: the governments of Germany and the USSR had good relations when they made a secret agreement to invade Poland and divide it between them.
