NEWS-MINER EDITORIAL
Help needed
Some villagers can’t eat or stay warm
Published Monday, February 2, 2009

The inability of many people in Alaska’s remote rural villages to afford fuel, food or both shouldn’t be any surprise. It’s time for Alaskans to respond with help.

We might have hoped that, somehow, it wouldn’t come to this. But now reports confirm that numerous people in some villages have no money to feed themselves or keep themselves warm.

Heating fuel prices were outrageously high last summer and fall when deliveries had to be made. Some deliveries were turned back by weather conditions, so the fuel must be delivered by air, the expense of which nullifies the recent price decreases. Groceries are untouchable for many people. Gasoline, needed to drive snowmachines far enough from the villages to hunt and collect wood, is beyond reach as well ...

2. After Hutchison whips Perry's ass,
he can hang with Blago and compare hairstyles. Just when you think that Palin has hit bottom, she keeps on digging.

3. Not to mention our $1.65 billion budget deficit
that she didn't foresee.

6. I don't think so.

In my opinion that road to Nome is kind of a foolish idea in today's economic climate. While it might be nice to be able to drive out there, it would be incredibly difficult and costly to keep it maintained in the winter, I would think. The last two highways built here had a legitimate purpose for being constructed -- the Parks to connect Anchorage to Denali Park to Fairbanks, and the Haul Road for transporting supplies from Fairbanks to Prudhoe. The only reason I can think of for a Nome Road (and this would fit with Sarah's mindset) would be if there are resources to exploit out there.

7. Oops: I see now it is not a billion dollar road, but a two billion dollar road. "A billion here,
a billion there, pretty soon it adds up to real money"

4. How much weight will her endorsement have on Perry's candidacy? Hmmm
