Holocaust Museum shooting suspect had Idaho ties
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

HAYDEN, Idaho -- ...Hayden, Idaho, resident Stan Hess tells The Spokesman-Review that James von Brunn seemed obsessed with violence, bitter over a stay in federal prison and fixated on guns ....

Von Brunn stayed at Hess' home for a few days in late 2004 or early 2005 before Hess says he suggested the man move out. Hess said Wednesday that Von Brunn's frequent talk of violence and guns pushed the two to a shouting match.

For years, Hayden was home to the Aryan Nations, a racist group run by neo-Nazi Richard Butler ...

Hess is a former leader of the California faction of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke's European-American Unity and Rights Organization.

1. Some say they are gone
but I live up here and have to say, when I drive in and around northern Idaho I see more Confederate flags than I've ever seen growing up in Texas.

2. I agree. I live in Spokane, and North Idaho is still a very right-wing area.

4. I live in North Idaho
We Idahoans have worked hard to kick these haters out of our state. Some in north Idaho have now moved into Montana. If you look on the SPLC's map you will see that my state has very few and those are now more silent because we've stood up to them. No longer do they parade, distribute literature, or demonstrate their presence. We have some here but most of you have a lot more than we do. It's time Idaho was recognized for the great progress we've made in this area. BTW, I live in Bonner County and was here 15 years ago when all the hate was going on. Citizens of North Idaho are to be commended for the positive work they have done to keep these hateful bigots at bay. The Bars and Stars do fly around but nothing like other states I've been in. I love living in Bonner County.

5. hmmmmm
I live here for 16 years so I think I should know what it's really like. Have you ever been here or is this just what you choose to believe?

7. And I live here
I'm not denying they are here. What I'm saying is it is not like it used to be. I felt free to drive around in my Obama mobile all over Bonner County. I even drove it into Noxin Montana which houses the headquarters of the Montana Militia. Even Viggo Mortensen bought a place in my small town in Bonner County and loves to come here. Look on the map above and see the number of hate groups in Idaho compared to other areas. They are everywhere. Yes, my husband and I are blue living in a sea of red. However, as I said, we love living here and when we die our ashes will be scattered here.

we even have mixed racial couples here who are not harassed. If the hate groups you mentioned above get out of line we stand up to them.

Cay

8. I love it there, too, and I'm glad to see that their are far fewer of those hate groups there now.
