The Right Has A Stronghold In The Wrong Place
We went to a volunteer military force in 1973. What do we have today? A lot of kids with no ideological bent and a military hierarchy leaning strongly to the right. Progressive centrists such as myself are a shrinking minority in the military. If we don’t get a better cross section of our society into the military, trouble is brewing for our kids and grandkids. Today, in Iraq and in America our industrial military complex is learning and refining the “art” of large scale urban pacification and surveillance.

1. A very intersting thought but I am not sure how this is accomplished
since we can't even get control of one branch of the government.

2. Military politically right
So, why don't you volunteer for military service? Isn't the solution that politically left people actually join up to balance the numbers? If so, why don't they?

3. Duke Dude
I am a retired military officer. If our country genuinely faced a threat, I'd be there. More lefties need to join.

4. What good would it really do?
As long as Bush is playing God, ahem "Commander in Chief" what good would it do?

5. Stop
A legitimate cross section of us over a period of 20-30 years in all aspects of historical cutting edge (warfare) could bring us to a global perspective. Teach your kids, get them into our military academies. Knowledge and history teaches that might is not right.

6. Fair enough
Okay, fair enough, you served, but why don't more dems/progressives? It is voluntary, after all. You can look at it two ways: Why are reps more likely to join or why are dems less likely to join?I am looking for root causes here.

7. Voluntary? FOR THE TIME BEING
If you have teenaged kids, I'd be planning their escape from Herr Busch's next chapter. This is gonna get reeeeeeal interesting.
