Bush gets tough on porn in the USA
http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1189873,00.html

With an election looming, the government is cracking down on the thriving adult market

Richard Luscombe in Miami
Sunday April 11, 2004
The Observer

America's booming adult entertainment industry is bracing itself for a 'summer of censorship' as the government clamps down on pornography.
For nearly 10 years, the resources of the Department of Justice's anti-obscenity division have been allocated almost exclusively to the war on child pornography, leaving those involved in the $10 billion-a-year (£5.5bn) adult market to their own devices.

But with producers of adult porn becoming increasingly lawless, according to Andrew Oosterbaan, head of the DoJ's anti-obscenity department, it is time to 'send ripples' through the industry and prosecute those producing and distributing obscene material. 'Nothing will be off-limits as far as content goes,' he said. 'We'll do everything we can to deter this conduct.'

Oosterbaan's department has its work cut out. More than 11,000 adult films are released annually in the US and there are 800 million DVD and video rentals of adult movies each year, according to the trade association Adult Video News.

10. Yes, I Live There
I live in Austin, Texas. Yes, we have porn shops, but no more than a dozen moving from Williamson to Hays County down I-35. We also have far more gas stations, restaurants, auto dealerships, hotels, shopping strip malls, branch banks, and hotels than we do porn shops.

11. How about that for priorities

Good grief.

Meanwhile, I have a soon to be 7 year old son who is obsessed with guns, bombs, violence, death and destruction...he hasn't said a single damn thing about sex...

The problem in this nation isn't sex, but violence...bullshit.

13. ...
Methinks Bush is misfiring here.

While he complains about the immorality of pornography, we are basically entering the Dark Age of the FCC, where they are letting every imaginable profanity air, every inch of a woman's body be displayed, and every statement of racism remain -- all of this on just a regular cable pack of 70 channels or so, stuff any kid can see.

So instead of trying to correct this horrid surge of vulgarity and cleaning up television, radio, and the print media, Bush has decided to attack millions of people in pornography who are breaking NO laws and are making an HONEST living.

Listen, I don't agree with pornography. I think it is wrong and immoral. But if it's not breaking any laws, people should be allowed to do it if they want. They aren't hurting anybody (unless the script calls for it).

BUSH: If you want to clean up America, start with your failing FCC and what people are seeing everyday in the media. Don't attack an industry that isn't openly accessible to anybody but adults.

14. Pornography causes - drug use? Terrorism? Yeah, that's it!
GNUS ITEM:
Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that his latest war on terror will be based on the fact that pornography is a direct precursor to terrorism.

"I know it for a fact that Bill Clinton's love of pornography involving Jamie Gorelick directly led to the 9/11 attacks, as well as the Oklahoma bombings. Therefore, i am re-assigning the entire anti-terrorism staff of the FBI to follow up on all pornography leads and to stop these crimes against nature before they can destroy our christian souls."

"Before God lets us win this war on terror, we must turn this christian nation around and prevent pornography before it develops into even worse crime. "

He also noted that pornography crimes went down (no pun intended) after he covered up the "disgusting mammalian display" in the Justice building. His plan to build extra-large prisons for those who dare enjoy themselves during a sexual act was delayed until his plan to erradicate all porn channels from cable and sat stations was fully put into place.
