Daily U.S. Casualties 4/18/2004
As of Friday, 685 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 491 died as a result of hostile action and 194 died of nonhostile causes. The department didn't provide an update Saturday.
The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Ukraine, four; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.
Since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 545 U.S. soldiers have died, according to the military's numbers as of Friday.
There were no deaths reported by the military.
The latest identification reported by the military:
Army Staff Sgt. Raymond E. Jones Jr., 31, Gainesville, Fla.; killed April 9 in Bayji, Iraq, by a rocket-propelled grenade; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division; Schweinfurt, Germany.
