Policy easing to bring Baathists into new Iraq

From John King
CNN Washington Bureau
Thursday, April 22, 2004 Posted: 4:24 PM EDT (2024 GMT)

(CNN) -- The White House confirmed Thursday that the administration is moving to change a postwar policy that blocked members of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party from Iraqi government and military positions.

The sweeping ban was put in place by civilian administrator Paul Bremer, but he now wants to change the policy as part of an effort to convince Sunnis, who dominate the party, that they are welcome members of the postwar political transition in Iraq.

2. remember when "Baath party holdovers" and "Saddam loyalists"
were the ones allegedly attcking our troops? Before they were replaced entirely with foreign thugs and terrorists who hate freedom?

3. Basically, as long as we get all the oil, nothing else matters
did we finish in in Talibanstan?
did we get UBL?
did we catch more "real" terra-ists (al Q)?
did we make anyone anywhere safer?
did we improve the life/lifestyle of the Iraqis?
did we find and destroy the WMDs?
did we bring freedom to Iraq?
did we improve the general "pacificity" in the M.E.?
did we make anyone love us more?
will we hand over Iraq to a sovereign Iraqi gov't?

Whatever!

7. Oh, well
why don't we just put Saddam back in power as a puppet and let Halliburton run things.

8. Ok, maybe I'm stupid but,
I can't understand the reasoning behind putting the Baathists back into power? Isn't it something like removing Hitler but allowing the SS to stay in power? Makes me feel that all the lost lives, the injuries and money spent went for nothing.

10. There are no good options
We have so screwed up things that there will be no desireable outcomes, only choices between the lesser of evils.

I just wonder how much further we are going to mire ourselves down.
We should never have disbanded the Iraqi Army and the interrim government that will be given power will have no legitimacy.

FUBAR, kudos to the WAR PRESIDENT.
