Daily U.S. Casualties 5/4/2004


As of Monday, 751 U.S. servicemembers have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 548 died as a result of hostile action and 203 died of nonhostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, six; Ukraine, four; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 611 U.S. soldiers have died -- 437 as a result of hostile action and 174 of nonhostile causes, according to the military's numbers.

The latest deaths reported by U.S. Central Command:


A soldier providing security at a weapons cache was killed Monday by hostile fire south of Baghdad.


Five sailors and one soldier were killed Sunday in an indirect fire attack on a military installation in Iraq's Anbar province.


A Marine was killed Monday in Anbar province while conducting security and stability operations.


The latest identifications reported by the Defense Department:

Marine Cpl. Scott M. Vincent, 21, Bokoshe, Okla.; killed April 30 in hostile action in Iraq's Al Anbar province; assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force; Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Marine Cpl. Joshua S. Wilfong, 22, Walker, W.Va.; killed April 30 in hostile action in Al Anbar province; assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force; Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Spc. Trevor A. Wine, 22, Orange, Calif.; died Saturday from injuries he received Friday when his convoy hit an explosive in Tikrit; assigned to the Army's 24th Quartermaster Company, Fort Lewis, Wash.


Members of the Army's 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Division, out of Baumholder, Germany, who were killed April 29 in an attack on their convoy: Staff Sgt. Esau G. Patterson, Jr., 25, Ridgeland, S.C.; Staff Sgt. Jeffrey F. Dayton, 27, Caledonia, Miss.; Sgt. Ryan M. Campbell, 25, Kirksville, Mo.; Spc. James L. Beckstrand, 27, Escondido, Calif.; Spc. Justin B. Schmidt, 23, Bradenton, Fla.; Pfc. Ryan E. Reed, 20, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Pfc. Norman Darling, 29, Middleboro, Mass.; Pfc. Jeremy Ricardo Ewing, 22, Miami, Fla.

1. This is important to always remember that
tThey did not have to die and that is the crime of it.
Update through today, the number of US deaths is now 986, 1117 total coalition, who knows how many Iraqi's. Coalition wounded is 6916 but that number leaves many out such as those that have related health problems after they get back home, etc. Iraqi wounded? Can't even imagine what that number is.
