Daily U.S. Casualties 5/6/2004


As of Wednesday, 758 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 551 died as a result of hostile action and 207 died of nonhostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; and Ukraine, four.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 618 U.S. soldiers have died -- 440 as a result of hostile action and 178 of nonhostile causes, according to the military's numbers.

Since the start of military operations, 4,133 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department's weekly tally.

The latest death reported by U.S. Central Command:

A soldier died Wednesday after a dump truck rammed his Humvee in an apparent attack at a checkpoint near Karbala, Iraq.

No new identifications were reported by the Defense Department.
