Republican congressmen and state party guys were actually receiving money from the German foreign ministry as late as 1940 to organize "keep the US out of war" efforts. Of course in the interest of national unity nobody made too big deal out of it after the fact. They just kind of retired. (I'm sure a little googling will reveal all, though) Funny how we always get screwed on these national unity deals! There's no shortage of public awareness of the American left's connections to Stalin (and there were many) but nobody ever talks about the American Hitler-lovers party.

On edit: Stephen Day of Illinois is the most famous one, I think, so I'll nominate him as symbolic worst-Republican.

Here's a stray paragraph that provides a sense of the tenor of the time.

On the eve of the Republican National Convention, money from this Nazi slush fund was used in a propaganda blitz for the isolationists. One Republican congressman received $3,000 for heading up a contingent of fifty isolationists. The Nazi money was well spent, as the convention closed with a party platform plank firmly opposed to US involvement in the war. The Nazis were especially pleased to note that the platform plank was taken almost verbatim from the full-page German propaganda ads placed in the New York Times on June 25.35 Stephen Day had been paid thousands of dollars to form the committee publishing the ad. Day, a Republican congressman from Illinois, would be named as a fascist collaborator by Maloney. Joe McCarthy was going to make pro-Hitlerism his defining issue early in his career (there were beaucoup German Americans in his district) but fortunately for him war broke out before he got too mixed up in it.

Allegedly, Harding didn't die from cholera. Some say that the Teapot Dome scandal--where big-business was illegally given free oil from US naval oil reserves in exchange for campaign contributions to Harding--would have led to disaster for Harding's re-election. Harding wasn't smart enough to come up with this scheme - his underlings and flunkies pulled it off instead. He couldn't be impeached, but wouldn't be re-elected because of his stupidity. So Harding may have been poisoned by his associates while on a train ride, leading to his sudden death, and Calvin Coolidge (another real winner, a union-busting do-nothing Republican SOB) assuming the presidency.

My nominations for worst Republican US Senators go to Jesse Helms and Phil Gramm. I think that our current Texas Governor Rick Perry has already gathered the title for worst Republican Governor in Texas History (Mind you, we've only had three since 1865). I think that Dubya will probably qualify as the worst Republican President since Benjamin Harrison.

He was a congressman from Georgia that was one of the Managers in the Impeachment hearing. It came out that he had been married three or four times, had a girlfriend that had had an abortion (when he was married to another woman). He ran for the Senate as the "Family Values" candidate.

Also, the congresswoman from Idaho that kept talking about "black helicopters flying over Idaho...and another winner -- also the woman who was one of Newt Gingrich's proteges. She was only there for 1 term. She married and became pregnant soon after that. Her husband "disappeared" and it came out that he had absconded with money that was meant for some non-profit he worked for.

In terms of elected Republicans, Hoover has to be the worst. The sheer amount of damage done to the country that he did by:

1. Causing the Great Depression by failing to repudiate the failed "supply-side" policies of his Republican predecessors.

2. Failing to do anything about the Depression early on, like closing the banks, government social spending, etc. which could have possibly stopped it or at least mitigated the damage.

3. Making it far worse than it was by passing the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in 1930, which imposed 60% tariffs on everything entering the country. This cut us off from the world. We were the major manufacturing power in the world back in the 20's and 30's, and a tariff hurt us, because other countries raised tarrifs in response, and US exports would have provided jobs to out-of-work people.

4. The "Bonus Army" incident in 1933. The "Bonus Army" was a group of hundreds of thousands of unemployed and impoverished WW 1 veterans and their families. They peacefully marched on Washington to try to get their military bonus payments promised to them by the government. They set up a gigantic camp right outside of Washington until the bonuses were paid. In response, Hoover deployed General MacArthur, of WW 2 fame, to terminate the Bonus Army with extreme prejudice. Several divisions of US Army regulars were called out, along with tanks and other vehicles. The troops burnt the Bonus Army camp to the ground, crushed several people with tanks, and tear-gassed the entire place, leading to several small children and babies suffocating to death in their beds and cradles. Typical Republican "respect" for our veterans!

Several other names come to mind for the title of Worst Republican Ever, but Hoover sticks out for mismanagement, incompetence, maltreatment of veterans, and sheer stupidity.

Newt Gingrich
Reason: Where to start? Let's begin and end with the slimiest proven allegation. At the exact same time that Newt Gingrich had promised to mention Monica Lewinsky at every press conference he gave, he was adulterously banging his intern, one of the least well-kept secrets in DC. After being driven from office, he divorced his second wife and married the intern. Honorable mention: Gingrich destroyed the career of moderate Republican Bill Paxon by threatening to expose alleged homosexual behavior, all because Paxon dared to question Gingrich's hate-spewing politics.

Strom Thurmond
Reason: You know all about him, his disgusting racism, homophobia and hypocrisy. But by his last term he was also being subtly manipulated by both the White House and Congress. Sorry, I can't comment on that part. Maybe someone will put it in a book one of these days.

Jesse Helms
Reason: See Strom, minus the manipulation part.

Trent Lott
Reason: Same old shit, really. Notable for the fact that his bust, which is displayed in Pascagoula, MS, has to be protected by an iron cage in order to prevent it from being defaced.

Dick Armey
Reason: Slightly more diabolical than incompetent. He had a truly draconian hiring policy: if he had any say in it, you didn't get a job unless you were a member of the RNC. His partisan hiring policies alone will affect American politics for the next three decades.

Don Nickles
Reason: He's rude, malicious, and unforgiving. Categorized by one of my friends as "the only truly evil person left in Congress." Unfortunately, I must spare you the exact details for reasons of confidentiality. He'll be gone soon, too.

Slade Gorton
Reason: My personal vote for worst, most evil Republican in my short professional lifetime. In addition to being the creator of the "owls or jobs" logical fallacy which has since polluted all environmental debates, "Skeletor" Gorton--heir to the Gorton Fisheries empire--devoted his entire career from AG of Washington state to the Senate to overturning--you guessed it--Indian fishing rights in Washington state, even after the Supreme Court threatened to send in the National Guard if he did not stop preventing Indians from using their treaty-guaranteed ancestral fishing grounds. Tell me that's not naked self-interest. He was the quintessential Republican son-of-a-bitch: anti-choice, anti-environment, anti-Indian, pro-corporation, fundamentalist, et cetera. Plato knew that Socrates believed it was most important to follow the rules of the culture (or tribe) that you lived in. Plato believed that the best way to govern was with a very small ruling class imposing their needs on a very large peasant class. (sound like today?) Legalized discrimination was born, and the peasant Greeks were grateful because they had a leg up on someone else.

Plato also believed that the best way to rule was through the legislation of morality. Especially sex morals that would relieve the wealthy of any social liability at all. You will notice the big bruha over Monica, Marriage rights, and other moral legislative topics today.

Aristotle, on the other hand, realized just how stupid Plato was. He correctly reasoned that the best way to govern was through a very large middle class. He reasoned that part would vote with the wealthy and part would vote with the peasants to avoid tyranny from either. Hence the Democratic emphasis on creating a huge middle class.

Also, Aristotle correctly reasoned that the best way to govern was through the legislation on money. Today, this could be seen as attempting to put a humanized face on the raw capitalism the crackpots advocate. Also, the rights of the environment would be weighed against the rights of the greedy under his vision.

In conclusion,since Plato was the first republi-kkklan he was therefore the WORST. We are still suffering under his bone head ideas.
