Call it a case of presidential mistaken identity.
Before leaving for the White House late last month for a meeting on Haiti, Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky pinned on a button backing her favored candidate in the U.S. Senate race in Illinois -- state Sen. Barack Obama. According to a Schakowsky spokesman, "The president stepped back and almost startled when he saw the button." The problem: Mr. Bush apparently misread the button and confused Obama with the world's most wanted terrorist: Osama bin Laden.
The Schakowsky spokesman said that the legislator went on to have an exchange with the president in which she clarified that she was not backing one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives for membership in the world's most exclusive club. "Barack Obama -- he's running for the United States Senate," Schakowsky explained to the president.
