John Birtch Society CONSERVATIVE INDEX (scores all 535 Congresscritters)

For 2003 , the 2 most conservative Senators were both Democrats (Robert Byrd and John Edwards got an 80%) and in the House Ron Paul got the top conservative score.See above link for total 2003 results plus details on every vote scored.

Below is the link for wider scores for 2004 ,2003, and 2002.

Just so you know , this organization doesnt wait till the end of the year to pick out important votes in a selective manner . Partisan scorecards from groups like the Christian Coalition and partisan GOP and Democratic groups only pick votes where mostly 1 party or another looks generaly better.

This is the ONLY honest scorecard I have ever seen.

6. Missed votes

And I was wrong about that covering all of 2003,I just scanned it in haste. It was just part of 2003 , the voting score cards are distributed every 3 or 4 moths and that covered the last part of 2003.

I dont know how many people actualy get these cards but around 6 years ago I heard the head of the group on C-SPAN say it was pretty effective at embarrasing reckless spending Republicans trying to pass as "conservatives" during town halls and other things when a ton of scorecards were being passed out.

7. I'll be damned before I quote the John Birch Society on anything.

And I won't quote the Bircher's allies either.

Accusations that political opponents of conservatives are America hating traitors, that dissidents should leave our country, that those who disagree with the President are trying to get the troops killed ... all were typical Bircher memes throughout the 1960's.

Do these attacks sound familiar? Most of the rightwing attacks still used against progressives originated in groups like the Birchers.

I stopped listening to Birchers about thirty years ago: they were hateful and divisive then, and I can't imagine any possible rehabilitation of the group.

Let's get the record straight: Edwards isn't among the most liberal Senators. But he's not one of the most conservative either.

8. I was showing how conservatives are divided.

BTW they count the warmongers as the villans fyi.I havnt checked them out in 5 years (and that isnt to kiss up to you , its just honest , and frankly its to my shame Im not studying all angles like I used too)and only did so because I heard their most prominent member (based on magazine articles , William Norman Gregg dominates the entire issues as of 5 years ago)tell a local Democratic campaigner that he would vote for the Democratic congressional canidate if he opposed the war.

I honestly only know their issue stances from around the late 90s when I read up a bit. They opposed every war in the 1900s according to what I read whenever they would talk about history.

On the other hand , they do root for right wing regimes everywhere just dont think we should get involved or donate any money. In Israel/Palestine for example they strongly support Israel but dont think we should aid them. Sounds resonable enough but then they say in addition to foreign aid being "unconstitutional" , it forces Israels hands to be tied and they never get to use their nukes (lol I heard that argument once , to be fair it was that famous Jewish nuclear scientists who wrote that article for the Birch magazine, name was Sam something I think, but it was supported 100% by the organization ).

Anyway , all they do now a days is attack Republicans . They hate nobody more than Hoovers , Bush's , and Buckley and that was before Dubya became prominent. They dont even talk like Democrats even exist and think if the GOP is crushed then the far right libertarian wing can take over the party.

Edit: (seems I must have read a few online articles in 2001 , here is the Sam Cohen link)
www.thenewamerican.com/tna/2001/07-02-2001/vo17no14_shalom.htm

Anyway, its does speak for it own disgusting self , I have a hard time disagreeing with you if you re-aranged the attacks a little. The Birch society has some vile right wing views on the one hand (see link)but on the other hand they arent conventional GOPers at all on wars. Though they want nothing to do with "hippies" and probabilly thats what you are remembering , in addition to their cheering for every brutal right wing regime the world over.
