Daily U.S. Casualties 7/30/2004

As of Thursday, 909 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 674 died as a result of hostile action and 235 died of nonhostile causes.

The British military has reported 60 deaths; Italy, 18; Spain, eight; Bulgaria and Poland, six each; Ukraine, four; Slovakia, three; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia and the Netherlands have reported one death each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 771 U.S. soldiers have died -- 565 as a result of hostile action and 206 of nonhostile causes.

The latest deaths reported by U.S. Central Command:

A U.S. soldier was killed Thursday when his patrol was attacked near Hawija, Iraq.

Two Marines assigned to the 1st Expeditionary Force were killed Wednesday in separate incidents in Anbar province.

The latest identifications reported by the Defense Department:

Army Sgt. DeForest L. Talbert, 24, Charleston, W.Va.; killed Tuesday in an explosion in Baladruc, Iraq; assigned to the Army National Guards 1st Battalion, 150th Armor Regiment, Beckley, W.Va.

1. An Oregon soldier was killed Wednesday

Pvt. Ken Leisten, 20, of Warrenton (a small town on the coast) was killed by a roadside bomb near Taji.

Another funeral that our Governor, Ted Kulongoski, will attend. He is an ex-Marine, and speaks at each of the funerals for our fallen soldiers. Left the convention, as I understand it, to attend one in Klamath Falls in southern Oregon. An amazing thing for him to do, IMHO. There have been far too many from our state in recent months.

I hate this stupid war.
