Daily U.S. Casualties 8/5/2004


As of Wednesday, 917 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 680 died as a result of hostile action and 237 died of nonhostile causes.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 779 U.S. soldiers have died -- 571 as a result of hostile action and 208 of nonhostile causes, according to the Defense Department on Wednesday.

No new deaths were reported by U.S. Central Command.

The latest identifications reported by the military:


Marine Capt. Gregory Ratzlaff, 36, Olympia, Wash.; died Tuesday in a noncombat incident at a base near Najaf, Iraq; assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego.


Army Spc. Justin Onwordi, 28, Chandler,

Ariz.; killed Monday when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Army Pfc. Harry Shondee, Jr., 19, Ganado, Ariz.; died Tuesday from injuries sustained Monday when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Army Sgt. Tommy Gray, 34, Roswell, N.M.; died Tuesday in a vehicle accident in Taji, Iraq; assigned to 215th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Marine Sgt. Juan Calderon Jr., 26, Weslaco, Texas; killed Monday in Anbar province, Iraq; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
