Daily U.S. Casualties 9/14/2004


As of Monday, 1,012 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 764 died as a result of hostile action and 248 died of nonhostile causes. The figures include three military civilians.

The British military has reported 65 deaths; Italy, 18; Poland, 13; Spain, 11; Bulgaria, six; Ukraine, six; Slovakia, three; Thailand, two; and Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia and the Netherlands have reported one death each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 871 U.S. military members have died -- 652 as a result of hostile action and 219 of nonhostile causes, according to the military's numbers Monday.

No new American deaths were reported by the military.

Marine Pfc. Jason T. Poindexter, 20; San Angelo, Texas, died Sunday in Anbar province, Iraq; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Marine 1st Lt. Alexander E. Wetherbee, 27, Fairfax, Va.; died Sunday in Anbar province, Iraq; assigned to 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
