Daily U.S. Casualties 9/17/2004


As of Thursday, 1,027 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 777 died as a result of hostile action and 250 died of nonhostile causes. The figures include three military civilians.

The British military has reported 65 deaths; Italy, 19; Poland, 13; Spain, 11; Bulgaria, six; Ukraine, eight; Slovakia, three; Thailand, two; the Netherlands, two; and Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Hungary and Latvia have reported one death each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 889 U.S. military members have died -- 668 as a result of hostile action and 221 of nonhostile causes, according to the military's numbers Thursday.

The latest deaths reported by the military:


In three separate incidents, one Marine was killed in action and two died of wounds sustained in action Thursday in Anbar province.

Marine Lance Cpl. Drew M. Uhles, 20, DuQuoin, Ill.; died Wednesday from injuries sustained in an attack in Anbar province; assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif.


Army 1st Lt. Tyler H. Brown, 26, Atlanta; died Tuesday in Ramadi when his unit was attacked; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey, Tongduchon City, Korea.


Army Sgt. Jacob H. Demand, 29, Palouse, Wash.; died Tuesday in Mosul when his patrol was attacked; assigned to the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Wash.


Marine Maj. Kevin M. Shea, 38, Washington, D.C.; killed Tuesday in Anbar province; assigned to 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Marine Lance Cpl. Mathew D. Puckett, 19, Mason, Texas; killed Monday in Anbar province; as signed to 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Marine Cpl. Adrian V. Soltau, 21, Milwaukee; killed Monday in Anbar province; assigned to 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Army Spc. Lauro G. DeLeon Jr., 20, Floresville, Texas; died Sept. 8, in Balad when explosives detonated near his convoy; assigned to the Army Reserves 644th Transportation Company, Beaumont, Texas.


Army Staff Sgt. David J. Weisenburg, 26, Portland, Ore., and Army Spc. Benjamin W. Isenberg, 27, Sheridan, Ore., died Monday in Taji when their vehicle was attacked; assigned to the Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, Corvallis, Ore.
