The infamous open letter from Bob Jones III that was reprinted in
an earlier DU posting is housed at
http://www.bju.edu/letter . For the last four hours Bob Jones University's website has been inaccessible, returning "Host not found" error messages.
The link was posted on Salon.com today and probably on a bunch of other websites. (Aha--looks like the Associated Press has picked up the story, too.) I guess today a whole lot of people are following the example set by GWB in 2000 and visiting Bob Jones University...
I'd guess that the site is offline simply because of the sheer volume of incoming traffic. According to
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/nation/10158683.htm&filter=0">the AP story, a BJU university spokesman is trying to backpedal on the letter:
Jonathan Pait, a spokesman for the university, said the letter was placed on the school's Web site because Jones had read it to students in chapel and many told their parents about it. He said Thursday that Jones had not received a response from the White House.
Pait said it would be a misreading of the letter to think that "everyone who voted for the Democrats is a pagan" or that "if you voted for John Kerry you are a despiser of Christ."
"For example, there are those who voted for John Kerry because they opposed the war in Iraq," Pait said. "Dr. Jones did not intend to paint everyone with that broad a brush."
I.e., the letter did not say what it said. Pathetic.
