tomorrow we get jobs report - Bloomberg estimates 200.000
January Employment

Companies may have hired an additional 200,000 workers last month, the most for any January since 1998, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed in a separate Bloomberg News survey before tomorrow's unemployment report. <snip>

1. Sounds Awfully Optimistic - But Is Only 50,000 More Than 150,000
Needed to accommodate new entrants.

Still not much expansion in net new jobs if the estimate is true.

3. Jobs
Why would you hope you're wrong that 200K jobs were created? That mindset is why 62MM voters think we're loons.

4. You've misinterpreted papau.
Welcome to DU halliburtonhell.

Papau was saying that he wishes that he is wrong about NOT hitting the 200k number. I'm imagine that he would be very satisfied if we did hit 200k and elated if we were well above it. He doubts that that will happen and it is this doubt that he wishes to be wrong about.

6. Seems possible under normal circumstances
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 11:22 PM by tritsofme
4 week moving average for initial claims is down to 330k, among other seemingly good indicators, but this economy has consistantly underperformed expectations.

My prediction is 130-150k.

"US January Job Gains Weaker Than Expected

Fri Feb 4, 2005 11:32 AM ET
By Andrea Hopkins

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employers added just 146,000 jobs in January, the government said on Friday in an unexpectedly weak report on the labor market, but a drop in job-seekers pushed the unemployment rate to its lowest level in more than three years.

The gain in nonfarm payrolls in January came in below expectations for 190,000 new jobs, but was enough to return the nation's employment to where it was before the 2001 recession began. It also erased the jobs lost during President Bush's first term. <...>"

11. Are we out of the four year bushole yet?
<President Bush's first term in office ended up showing a net gains in payroll jobs. From January 2001 to January 2005, the economy generated a net gain of 119,000 jobs. That allows Bush to escape being the first president since Herbert Hoover to have a net loss of jobs on his watch, a forecast by Democrats throughout the 2004 presidential campaign.>
