Drive them off the dealer's lot and they depreciate. When tires go flat and air conditioners fail, the maintenance costs can be a killer. And, of course, there's gasoline. Prices at the pump jumped last year and stayed there.

The American Petroleum Institute wants drivers to cheer up, so it compiled a list of other major expenditures.

According to the group:
• Public transportation costs are up 108 percent.
• Medical costs are up 219 percent.
• Tobacco costs are up 396 percent.
