chronically unemployed is at an 11-year high -over 2 million-so Bush nixes
extension of unemployment benefits because of the improving economy?!?

Did no one notice that new jobless claims unexpectedly went up last week, to the highest level in six weeks - granted that our GOP controlled whore media told us it was no big deal!

Gee, two years ago we had a compassionate conservative as the president who had argued as a candidate and through his first year in office that, "it is compassionate to actively help our fellow citizens in need." But the president's unwillingness, for the second time in twoyears, to promote the extension seems to undermine that rhetoric - or proves that whatever worries Bush had about the media noting Bush lies and putting in print with comments - rather than Dem lies or just along side of Dem "lies" (those taken out of context pretend it is a lie that the media uses for Dems) - is now gone..

Gee - two years ago it was we must have a few tax credits for working families - in addition to those tax cuts for the rich and corporations - because - as Bush said - "I don't think ought to balance their budget on the backs of the poor."

Now we get only campaign talk - no dollars - as Bush smirks and says with all seriousness - "as long as there are people looking for work who cannot find a job, there is more that we need to do," and that, "we'll continue working with Congress on that issue."

So -over 2 million active job seekers out of work for 27 weeks or more -- more than 50 percent greater in October 2003 than in March 2002, and the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that between 80,000 and 90,000 workers per week will lose access to benefits beginning at Xmas.

sigh .... above facts found at

1. This is a government
For the corporations only. It boggles my mind that people who work do not understand this. Doing away with overtime, sending good professional jobs overseas, giving taxes away to the rich...why is he getting away with this stuff. Mass hynotism?

2. The ending of the unemplyment benifits is going to hurt.
Expect bankrupsies and forclosures to shoot up, as we begin to move from poverty, to abject poverty.

5. We had better start publicizing our extraordinary record on
unemployment. Over the last 16 years, the unemployment rate has been consistent: when a democrat is in office, the unemployment rate drops dramatically; when a republican is in office, the unemployment rate goes up. Whether from a Republican administration or a Democratic administration, Republicans inherit a low (sometimes, an unbelievably low) unemployment rate, and it invariably goes up. During the 90's, the democrats inherited a high unemployment rate, and it went down dramatically. To wit:

Republican President

1989 Average Unrate = 5.3%

1990 Average Unrate = 5.6%

1991 Average Unrate = 6.9%

1992 Average Unrate = 7.5%

Democratic President

1993 Average Unrate = 6.9%

1994 Average Unrate = 6.1%

1995 Average Unrate = 5.6%

1996 Average Unrate = 5.4%

1997 Average Unrate = 4.9%

1998 Average Unrate = 4.5%

1999 Average Unrate = 4.2%

2000 Average Unrate = 4.0%

Republican President

2001 Average Unrate = 4.8%

2002 Average Unrate = 5.8%

2003 Average Unrate = 6.0%

The record shows a stark contrast between Republican and Democratic administrations. People seem to forget that under Democrats, the unemployment rate was in the 4% range for four years–repeat, four years. People also seem to forget that the unemployment rate dropped below 4% for the first time in over 30 years under Democrats. We shouldn’t let them forget.

7. Came across this interesting tidbit.....
Extending unemployment benefits again won't only help avert these hardships, it would also help stimulate the entire economy.

Mark Zandi, an economic forecaster who runs Economy.Com, estimates that, compared to the administration's dividend tax cuts, extending unemployment benefits would produce about 20 times greater bang for the buck in terms of a positive effect on the U.S. gross domestic product.

For millions of the unemployed, it is literally impossible to find a job. The government's most recent report on job openings and labor turnover showed that there were fewer than three million available jobs in July at a time when 9.3 million unemployed Americans were looking for work - in other words, three job seekers for every job.

By every measure, jobless workers need the program now even more than in March 2002 when TEUC was enacted. The unemployment rate was 5.7 percent then and is 6.1 percent now. Then, 1.3 million people had been jobless for at least 27 weeks, now it's 2.1 million. And the number of people jobless for more than 39 weeks but still searching for work has doubled.

The employment situation isn't likely to improve in any meaningful way in the months ahead. The Congressional Budget Office predicts that unemployment will average 6.2 percent during 2004, a half percentage point higher than the rate in March 2002 when TEUC was first enacted.

8. "chronically unemployed"
The only voice the chronically unempolyed
are going to get is their own and that
will have to come through organizing
themselves. I would think that they could
find each other through the internet and
with an abundance of time and the combined
brains and creativity come up with ways to
be heard nationally.
The bush regime wants these people to go
away so they don't have to be embarrased
by their numbers. So far they are getting
their way.
