Liar Nation: Finally Reaping What We Have Sown

by charles hugh smith

September 16, 2008

The operant phase of this nation in this decade: "Take the 'con,' Captain!"

It's all too easy to be distracted and confused by the complexity of the financial unraveling which now transfixes our craven media and politicos, but the underlying cause is really very simple: we have become a nation of liars, and no one cares.

We have candidates for the highest office of the land pronouncing their deep religious faith, yet not one candidate has expressed any outrage at the ubiquity, the pervasiveness, the crassness of the nation's reliance on lies or the incalculable harm perpetrated by the lies which have formed the very bedrock of the debt/credit bubble which is now, at long last, finally imploding.

1. Uh-huh. Yes, indeed. I hope lots of people read that post, even though in the end
it won't matter.

Despite the efforts of Mr Smith and many other courageous and correct writers, it'll just end up the same as it always has: The people who will suffer did NOTHING wrong, and the criminal fuckers who made the crisis happen will walk away with millions.

I am a business owner and therefore an avowed capitalist, but this situation is just fucking DISGUSTING.

This is NOT capitalism, it's a crime.

5. They accuse good folks of just what they're up to.
And they do the opposite of the virtuous crap they spew.
Their entire success is based on lies. And they have hypnotic wires and dishes to spoon feed the masses as needed.

They don't give a fuck for the Jesus nor the United States of America. The latter I love very much.

2. "...we have become a nation of liars, and no one cares."
That's a part of what has to change, isn't it? It's not about constructing lies and deceit for partisan gains. It's about openness, integrity and accountability as operating foundations... unfortunately pretty rare qualities these days. I hope it's not too late to make those changes.

3. I think I'm what they call an Agnostic , I don't believe, but I don't disbelieve?
.
.
.

I just ain't sure whether there is a supreme power or not

But if the USA is an arm of Christianity as it claims,

Then I'm a definite non-believer.

But if I believed in Satan, hell, the underworld,

The USA Administration would be on top of my short list for suspects.

Actually, I don't HAVE a short list - -

The USA Administration is the only one that comes to mind

Go figure . . .

6. What is really imploding is the derivatives bubble
and that is going to take the whole world down as securities on balance sheets are found to be worth only a tenth or so of their last traded value.

The crash in the Dow, however, has just about happened already with hyperinflation and the fall in the dollar shrinking the wealth represented there while keeping the index flat.

What remains are bankruptcies among all institutional investors that bought derivative based securities like the mortgage based "structured investment vehicles" from hedge funds. That means banks, central banks, insurance companies, pensions, and states, themselves, will become increasingly insolvent just when hyperinflation in goods is gearing up.

When the GOP starts to channel Hoover, you know the jig is up.
