RENAULT SEEKS TO USE NISSAN TO MAKE FOURTH ATTEMPT AT US BREAKTHROUGH
DETROIT, Michigan, Jan 7 (AFP) - Renault is looking to make a new attempt at cracking the US market after 2010 while its Nissan affiliate is aiming for an immediate sales boom in the United States, according to their leaders.
Renault has already failed three times to break into the world's biggest and most profitable car market and the French firm's chairman Louis Schweitzer told AFP that the next one will not come before 2010 and that it will need Nissan's expertise.
"We have left the United States three times and I want the fourth one to be the good one," he said in an interview.
He gave no precise date but said "my intuition is that it will be in the first half of the decade rather than the second."
Schweitzer highlighted the French maker's concern to avoid another defeat such as American Motors Corporation, the makers of Jeep, which it bought in 1979 but sold again in 1987 to Chrysler.
