4. Note: Debt and deficit are not the same thing

There's a difference between the national deficit and the national debt.

The debt is ALL the money the US owes.

The deficit is the shortfall between spending and revenues in any given year(if we spend $500B more than we take in in taxes, we have a $500B deficit).
