The crucial issue here is the classification of one's shares. If your shares (in any equity) are held "in street name" by your broker then they are available for anyone (even large trading houses) to "borrow" and use against your own stock or a broader sector such as gold. An intervention can also be used to raise the price of an equity. Most investors are unaware of this use (or misuse depending upon your viewpoint) of their shares without their permission. Only by holding your certificates in "Type 2" classification or by receiving the physical certificates can one be certain that they will never be used without your permission.
