BMW: Theft threatens 10 000 - SA
Pretoria - Cable theft may force the BMW plant in Rosslyn outside Pretoria to close.

At least 10 000 jobs and millions of rands in foreign investment hangs in the balance. Johan van der Walt, spokesperson for BMW's mother company in Germany, is concerned about power outages at the plant.

"It costs us R200 000 every time to get the plant operational again. The plant is losing units and production time," said Van der Walt. On one occasion equipment worth R500 000 was lost.

Van der Walt said his company decided where every new car series should be built. The South African plant competes well in terms of quality, but the power outages are casting doubt on its reliability.
