Meet the New Hedge Fund in the Insider-Trading Probe: Balyasny.
Chicago hedge fund Balyasny Asset Management is the latest name added to the firms being examined in the government’s wide-ranging investigation into insider trading.

Our Journal colleagues reported that the hedge fund, founded by Dmitry Balyasny in 2001, didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The Journal’s Susan Pulliam reported last year that federal officials were looking into possible passing on of insider information about EMC Corp. by Mark Adams, an analyst at Balyasny.

Balyasny also offered to cut fees on its biggest hedge fund to boost its assets, Bloomberg News reported this fall. Last year, according to Marketwatch, Balyasny hired a team of health-care traders from Barclays to concentrate on investment opportunities stemming from government changes to health-care rules.

The stock holdings of Balyasny and its Atlas Global Fund are focused on industrial and energy companies. The firm has more than $1.9 billion in assets under management, according to FactSet’s LionShares.

Balyasny’s biggest holdings, as of Sept. 30:

Baker Hughes – 3.56% of the portfolio, or $65 million in market value

Transocean – 3.1% of the portfolio, or $57 million

Halliburton – 2.7% of the portfolio, or $31 million

BP – 2.64% of the portfolio, or $27.3 million

Patterson-UTI Energy - 2.56% of the portfolio, or $23.4 million
