Among proposed GOP cuts - AmeriCorps program - WAKE UP!
As a proud AmeriCorps alum this comes as no surprise. Any program that spends a relatively small amount of money (1.059 billion for the Corporation for Nat'l and Community Service in 2010) to teach American citizens to become civically engaged and connected to their local community has to be a pernicious plot to socialize America.

These people think that the community orgs will easily be able to "pick up" where federally funded programs let off... Well here's news to you all - most community orgs. get some government funding; either state, local, or federal, and without that funding the people giving 210% day in and day out for crappy (or no) salaries will not be able to administer needed services throughout America. These non-profits pay $5000 (some pay slightly more or less) a year to have a FULL TIME EMPLOYEE come and work for them - and here's the point that republicans miss -

Take this funding away and WAY more people will end up on the public assistance rolls and the taxpayer will be left paying substantially more over the long term! Wake the Hell Up and look further down the road than next election people - get some sense of perspective.

1. thanks for posting this
Americorps has its good and bad but it has done a lot of good for a lot of people... I always thought of Americorps as a way to do public service, but also as a place to always be able to get a job (naive - we need it more than ever now)

2. you have to remember this program helps only democrats.
as an alum did`t you realize that everyone who you worked with and those who you helped were democrats? after all republicans would never accept help from the federal government let alone a democrat.

one of the few programs that has a big bang for the bucks.

just think if we had a 2011 version of the ccc/wpa....the republicans would explode.

3. Americorps costs every..
family about $9 per year.

"Defense" budget costs every family in the US $7,000.

$9 bucks is chump change... couch cushion money...

The "defense" budget.. not so much...
