Consumer Job Remains Vacant
Consumer Job Remains Vacant

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704336504576258770479635708.html

White House officials seeking someone to run the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have so far failed to find a nominee, with several candidates rebuffing the administration's overtures, according to people familiar with the process.

One concern of some: That accepting would undercut Elizabeth Warren, the Harvard law professor and consumer advocate who is currently a special adviser to the president charged with setting up the bureau. She remains a hugely popular figure among many Democrats and anathema to many Republicans.

Many on the left want Ms. Warren, a longtime critic of the financial industry who pushed to create the consumer protection agency, to become its director.

The nascent bureau must have a director in place by July 21 in order to get a slate of broad powers to attack fraudulent and abusive financial practices.

That deadline could result in the White House nominating Ms. Warren, now a special adviser to the president charged with setting up the bureau.

(snip)

President Barack Obama could avoid that fight by appointing her during a congressional recess before July 21.

1. Didn't Warren state in no uncertain terms she didn't want the job? nt

2. Did she?
All I know is the article said she's interested, Dems want her, Republicans hate her and that she had no comment.

Personally I'd love it if she was appointed. :)

4. I'm not finding what I'm thinking of, but I'm not the best at unearthing stuff.
Google is my friend, it's just that I'm not the best Googler.

What I seem to recall is that it was kind of just a general piece on her, and her saying how much she loves her "real" job and has plans to return to it, and I remember feeling kind of disappointed when I read it.

I DID find some stuff that I didn't like -- like her considering Martha Cokely for a position and appointing some guy from the Fed -- ewwww.

5. I think she said something along the line that she didn't want to become the issue.
Getting the consumer protection in place was the important thing, not her career.
