Saks, Wal-Mart show widening U.S. consumer split

"CHICAGO (Reuters) - At luxury department store chain Saks Inc (NYSE:SKS - News), customers were buying more designer suits at full price.

At Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT - News), more customers were shopping with food stamps.

Wal-Mart and Saks, as well as home improvement retailer Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD - News) and off-price apparel chain TJX Cos Inc (NYSE:TJX - News), posted quarterly results that beat analysts' expectations on Tuesday.

But company comments about consumer spending showed the split between upper-income consumers who have jobs and are little affected by rising costs for food and other essentials, and lower-income shoppers who are struggling with stubbornly high unemployment and rising costs..."
