Arizona requires utilities to add renewable energy sources

PHOENIX - Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard has approved rules written by utility regulators to boost the state's requirements for electricity providers to use power from solar, wind and other renewable sources, officials announced Friday.

The Arizona Corporation Commission approved the renewable energy standards last October, but the rules needed to clear a legal review by Goddard to take effect.

Approved 4-1 by the commission, the rules generally require that state-regulated utilities get 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025, with annual increases from the current mandate of roughly 1 percent.

"This is a solid, achievable percentage rate," said Commissioner Jeff Hatch-Miller.

1. As a native Arizonan and a Pinnacle West stockholder I'd like to call bullshit. There's enough

money and space in this state to be 50% solar by 2025. Easily. I've been paying extra to encourage solar for years now. There's no reason other than millions(possibly more) in lost profit to keep renewables inching forward at such a slow rate. Hey, who cares about the environment or the poor people, schools, etc. who should get free power when there's a buck to be had?:sarcasm:
