New greenhouse may grow again (Maine)

MADISON -- Backyard Farms hopes to build another giant greenhouse next to its existing 25-acre tomato facility within a year or two, company executives said Monday.

Backyard Farms Executive Vice President Wayne Davis said the company hopes to build one more greenhouse within the next two years. A three-to-five-year plan calls for three more greenhouses, employing more than 300 people, Davis said.

Officials said the company's vine-ripened tomatoes have been a hit in the marketplace.

Those permits included a biomass cogeneration facility.

Last winter, Backyard Farms began its first shipments of vine-ripened tomatoes throughout New England.

3. and they have significantly lower food-miles compared to tomatoes from FL, CA or Mexico

and most (if not all) of the electricity used at that facility is locally produced hydro-power.

The proposed new co-gen biomass plant is pretty cool too...

2. Can't beat vine ripened

which is why I have plants in my backyard with lovely tomatoes ripening on a schedule that will keep us in fruit for the rest of the summer. And maybe even some to make stewed tomatoes with my own peppers to freeze for sauces.
