http://capwiz.com/taxpayer/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=5890241Congress is considering making a $30 million down payment on the Modern Pit Facility – a program that would eventually cost taxpayers $2-4 billion to build and an additional $200-300 million in annual costs. The pit facility is supposed to manufacture nuclear “pits”– which are used to trigger massive explosions in nuclear weapons. This facility is the nucleus of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s plan to reestablish the nuclear weapons complex, and spending, back to Cold War levels.
Even more outrageous is that the pit facility would be built to solve a problem that may not exist. The agency doesn't even know the expected lifespan of our nation’s current pit stockpile, and is not expected to finish their analysis until 2006. But, by even the most conservative estimates, our current pit stockpile is capable of meeting our needs for the next two decades. This is a risky billion dollar "cart before the horse" scheme. At the very minimum, lawmakers should deny funding for this project pending the release of the nuclear agency's pit lifetime report in two years.
