U.S. plans long border wall in south Texas
Tue Sep 25, 2007 6:32pm EDT

HOUSTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government said it plans
to build 70 miles of 16-foot-tall (5 meter) border
fencing in southern Texas, including a section through
a sensitive wildlife refuge, but local opponents vowed
on Tuesday to keep fighting the wall.

The plans were unveiled late on Monday in the first
detailed look at the barrier the government says it must
build to slow illegal immigration along the 1,200-mile-
long (1,920-km) Texas-Mexico border.

In a request for public comment on the environmental
impact of the fence, the U.S. Customs and Border
Protection agency said construction could begin next
spring.

The refuge is considered one of the most biologically
diverse wildlife sanctuaries in the nation and
environmentalists say the fence could harm endangered
species such as ocelots and jaguarundi found there.

2. If they want to stop illegal immigration, pay living wages. That way, Americans
line up for those jobs that go to Mexicans. Otherwise, just call it what it really is: American employers filling a labor need.

3. American employers CREATING a labor need.....
The "business community" doesn't want to stop illegal immigration, not when it provides such a lovely dirt cheap labor force.

4.  "Glitch renders 'virtual fence' unworkable ..."

This was part of a $67M contract to Boeing. Guess they've exhausted the graft potential of the virtual wall, now seeing what they can get out of a real wall.

5. Who do you think the contractors are going to hire
to build this fence. Dollars to donuts it will be undocumented labor. I was watching the building of a concrete wall that is to be the front of our local Emergency Management HQ and the workers could very well be without documents. Nobody that is a citizen works that hard.

7. This is a really shitty plan
The area along the Rio Grande is practically the only real riparian for 100 miles in either direction.
