US Department of Energy releases 2007 Greenhouse Gas Report

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released its 2007 Greenhouse Gas Emissions report today, outlining the the latest trends in US energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Here's some of the highlights:

* Total greenhouse gas emissions in 2007 were 1.4 percent higher than in 2006.

* The increase in U.S. carbon dioxide emissions in 2007 resulted primarily from two factors:

1. Unfavorable weather conditions requiring more home heating and cooling, and

2. A greater reliance on fossil fuel energy from coal and natural gas

* Human-cause greenhouse gas emissions rose from 7.1 million metric tons in 2006 to 7.2 million metric tons in 2007 - a one year increase of 1.4%

* 81% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the United States was related to energy usage in 2007

* The main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, has continually rose (except for a minor fall in 2006) since 1990

* The United States will account for 19.6% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions in 2030

3. Yup - teh Oil Shock + Bush-o'-nomics

Automobile travel down 5-8% nationwide.

Electrical demand down nationwide.

No really nasty heat waves in the South this year (like they had in 2007).

Here in Maine, EVERYONE I know either did a major weatherization project on their home or business and/or switched away from fuel oil to wood.

There will be a big drop in fuel oil consumption (in Maine anyway) if we don't have a cold winter...
